Trevor Stephenson: Harpsichord & Fortepiano “From Quill to Hammer” – WI Public TV

Harpsichordist & fortepianist Trevor Stephenson is interviewed by Wisconsin Public Television’s Norman Gilliland. Discussion of the cultural and aesthetic shift that occurred during the 18th century as the harpsichord was supplanted by the fortepiano. How and why did the clarity, spirituality, and mysticism of the harpsichord’s plucked-string sound give way to the opacity, wit, and theatricality of the fortepiano’s struck-string sound? Musical examples by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stephen Foster.
